Hunter College High School Test | Grammar and Usage Questions

If students want to attend Hunter College High School, they must pass a highly rigorous entrance exam with questions covering math topics, reading comprehension, English language arts, and essay writing. Students must achieve a high score on all sections of the exam in order to be admitted, so it’s key to understand and prepare for each type of question that may come up.

Hunter College High School Test | What’s The Format of the Hunter Entrance Exam?

During the three hour Hunter College High School Test, students must answer 35 math questions, write an essay, and complete 60 Language Arts problems. With the exception of the essay, these questions are all in multiple choice format, but they can still be tricky.

Within the Language Arts section, students must complete grammar and usage problems and analyze several different passages. There is no specified time limit for each section, so students must allot time as they see fit and keep track of their own progress.

Hunter College High School Test | What are the Grammar and Usage Questions?

The first problems in the Languages Arts section are grammar and usage questions, and there are approximately ten to fifteen of these problems on the test. As one might expect, these questions expect students to understand how words function in a sentence. However, these questions also test punctuation skills, so students must be able to analyze many different parts of each sentence for every question. The format of this subsection is simple. Each question shows the student a sentence with four underlined pieces and a “No error” option. The test-taker must select the incorrect part of the sentence or choose the “No error” answer.

The tricky part comes into play when students try to study for these questions, because they test all kinds of grammar and punctuation rules. Students should be able to recognize errors in subject/verb agreement, verb tense, comma use, quotation mark misplacement, helping verb use, good vs. well confusion, contraction mistakes, which vs. that mistakes, and preposition use, among other ELA skills.

This can seem like an overwhelming list, so it’s important to remember that it’s much easier to catch mistakes in a sentence than it is to list out grammar rules with no context! Reading plenty of books and brushing up on basic sentence structure will go a long way during test prep, because these strategies will help students recognize whether or not a sentence is correct on test day.
